SWS Storm Chase cast Part 2 -26-2009

Strong Storm Near Marion, IL from Daniel Porter. Good Cloud To Ground Lightning, some Flooding and Hail.

Storms Are A Coming, But Don't Look To Be Severe

Some gusty winds will be with this band as it comes through. Looks like a little burst of wind in particular with that line segment on the Upper Level hand corner of the image. Decent lightning data returns are seen, so perhaps I get a lightning strike or two on video for yas and a gusty wind driven rain.

It's a shame too. The Effective Helicity is nearing 400, but it's elevated and capped off due to little to no Surface Based Cape and the marginal Elevated CAPE in place.

Otherwise, we would be talking about SEVERAL tornadoes going on right now! UGH! Maybe next time!

SPC has put Severe Threat Even More Westard

I think this could be because of the model trends of a slower and more eastward component to this low pressure. I still think Wind Damage And Isolated Tornadoes will be our main threat, once again after midnight tonight. There is still some stable air at the surface around these parts and there is little to no sunshine today. All these factors will help temper the severe weather threat overall

Damaging Winds Will Be The Main Threat, But Isolated Tornadoes Can Not Be Ruled Out Either. Hail Will Be A Marginal Threat

As of this past Saturday, Jacob Moss Is Now A Bear Scout!

Great pic here right before he "moved up" at The Blue And Gold Banquet Dinner at Grace Assembly Church Of God In Greenwood, Indiana. I am really proud of my only son, but he has grown quite fast. Boy Scouts And Football seem to really be his "thang" at this point in his life. He already has been involved with more things in his nearly 9 years of life than I did during my entire childhood.

I guess this is where I can say that I helped succeed in getting my children in having more productive lives and continue to prepare them for the real world. All three of our kids have been fortunate to have parents that care enough to try to always give them the most opportunities that we can.

Part three of three videos showing a large (and very fast moving) tornado/funnel cloud in southern Taylor County, GA. five miles southwest of Reynolds. In this video, the rear funnel finally ropes out and dissipates, while a second funnel begins to develop in front of it. At one point, there were three funnels dipping out of the main wall cloud! (not seen in the video) The storm would finally weaken to a non-tornadic state approximately 20 miles east of this location. There were also reports of baseball-sized hail associated with this supercell.

A listener commented on the poll about tornado warnings on the Alabama Weather Blog, www.alabamawx.com.
Coming next week will be Stu Ostro from The Weather Channel with an open discussion on global warming.
From The Weather Center:
WeatherBrains 101: We see them nearly every day and yet they have a tremendous impact on our daily weather. Sometimes they are fluffy and white, other times strikingly ominous with a boiling appearance, they can even be pink and purple. We’re talking about clouds, of course, so this week we take a quick look at the topic of clouds.
TWIWH: Bill Murray looks back at the week of February 18th. And what a week with tornadoes - yes, we’re getting close to that season again - and there’s a couple of snow storms to add to the big events of this week. Plus a memorable note from way back in history having to do with a modern device - the telegraph.
Listener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. The survey takes just a minute or two to complete and provides us with an opportunity to learn where you are and hear your thoughts and comments on the show. Click here to take the survey.

Remembering the Feb. 9, 1959 St. Louis Tornado

February 10, 1959 - A house at the corner of Delmar Blvd. and Whittier St. was destroyed by a tornado. Eight people died in the collaspe. (P-D)

By
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
02/08/2009
The weather on the night of Monday, Feb. 9, 1959, was all wrong for midwinter. It was 63 degrees downtown at midnight. Heavy storms pounded St. Louis with three inches of rain, flooding basements and streets. A motorist drowned near Alton. The Weather Bureau office at Lambert Field had issued a severe-thunderstorm warning. Overnight, a wispy shape appeared on the bureau's World War II-vintage radar, then vanished. Forecasters pondered adding a tornado warning, but did not. It was February, usually not a time for tornadoes.Even had the bureau upped the alert, it wouldn't have activated the region's warning sirens. In those early years of the Cold War, sirens were reserved for air attack by the Soviets. In 1959, St. Louis was a crowded, bustling industrial city of 750,000. Families filled the apartments above the shops on busy boulevards such as Grand, Delmar and Page.

That Monday, they went to bed to the sound of rain. After midnight, the temperature plummeted. Shortly before 2 a.m., when the Weather Bureau radar showed the wispy shape, a tornado roared above rooftops east of Glencoe, in rural southwestern St. Louis County. The storm gathered killing force and churned its way through the heart of St. Louis. It toppled the 575-foot KTVI-TV tower at Hampton and Oakland avenues, ripped roof from the old Arena and wrecked whole blocks west and north of midtown. Ground zero was a three-story brick home at 4202 Delmar Boulevard, at Whittier Street, where eight people died. The tornado's final toll: 21 dead and 345 injured. It was the third deadliest tornado in St. Louis history and, for now, the last devastating one. This Tuesday, Feb. 10, is the 50th anniversary of the tornado of '59.Along its path, much landscape is changed. The Arena was dynamited 10 years ago. Olive Street and Boyle Avenue glowed briefly as Gaslight Square, fell to urban decay and rose yet again with attractive new housing. Reminders of the tornado are few: Channel 2's stubby tower on Hampton, a scattering of city lots that have been vacant since post-tornado demolition. But to survivors of that harrowing night, the memories are crisp and unpleasant. ROOFS RIPPED OFFAfter introducing itself near the Meramec River, the tornado skipped through Warson Woods, Rock Hill, Brentwood and Maplewood, damaging roofs and trees. At 8503 Florence Avenue in Brentwood, where Flavia Schmidt, 49, was asleep in her brick bungalow, the funnel's suction force exploded her roof. She awoke unhurt to wind and an angry sky. A frantic neighbor roused her son by phone from his apartment near Forest Park.Ralph Schmidt, now 74, sped south through peaceful neighborhoods, puzzled by the fuss. Rounding his old corner, he saw his family home, roofless and surrounded by bricks. In the darkness, he stumbled and twisted an ankle. "Mine was an unceremonious injury," said Schmidt, who now lives in Arnold. Three miles northeast, Jim and Pansyetta Fleener and their 13-month-old daughter, Lisa, were asleep in their third-floor apartment at 1014 Oakview Place, near the KTVI tower. The Fleeners awoke to a wild rattling of trash cans outside."My husband ran to the living room window. I was behind him at the doorway to the living room when everything fell onto my face," Pansyetta Fleener said in a recent interview. "The tower smashed through the front window and all the way out the back of our apartment. Jim was trapped, saying, "Come help me.'"
TORNADO REMEMBERED
"The front wall of our house was gone."
GALLERY: Fiftieth anniversary of deadly tornado
VIDEO: Tornado! Feb. 10, 1959Lisa was asleep, next to broken brick in her crib. Pansyetta helped free her husband and grabbed the baby. They went to the back door, but the mangled tower blocked the fire escape.Moving on, the tornado hit the Arena, mangled the giant Ferris wheel at the old Forest Park Highlands, buzzed the park and smashed windows at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Spinning behind the St. Louis Cathedral, it struck McAuley Hall at 325 North Newstead Avenue, then a residence for Catholic business women. A falling chimney crushed two maintenance men.One block north, police Officer Theron Easterly uttered the first official storm report at 2:14 a.m. "A tree just went through my windshield," he shouted into his radio mike.Just to his east, the funnel inflicted its worst in a three-block radius around Olive and Boyle. In that compact area, 11 died and 34 were injured. The storm destroyed roofs and top floors of three-story buildings, ripped away walls and filled the streets with debris. At 4202 Delmar, a three-story rooming house collapsed. Firefighters dug through the wreck all night beneath floodlights. Six of the eight who died there were Mildred Campbell and five of her seven children. Firefighters found her surviving daughters, Anita and Constance, beneath a television set.Skipping northeastward, the tornado got busy again just west of North Grand Boulevard. In that neighborhood of two-story homes and apartments, five more were killed and 31 injured.Hallie Harris and her husband, Eddie, were asleep in a bedroom with their young daughters, Jacqueline and Denise. In another room were Hallie Harris' mother and grandmother. Their home was a second-floor apartment at 3754 Cote Brilliante Avenue. Hallie Harris was six months pregnant."What woke us up was the ceiling and a wall falling onto the kids' bed," said Hallie Harris, now 71 and living south of the tornado site. "I thought they'd been crushed. We pulled the wood and stuff away and they were fine. They were still asleep."The Harrises got their children outside and walked into an upside-down world of shredded trees, downed power lines and screaming people. Above them was their television, stuck in a tree.Tracking northeast, the tornado killed two more in the 2700 block of Bacon Street and another near Hyde Park before lifting up. It damaged roofs in Granite City and was gone.SLOW TO REACTAt 2:38 a.m., the Weather Bureau received its first report of serious damage. Fire and police officials, slow to realize the extent of the disaster, didn't call in the city Civil Defense agency until about 4 a.m.Back on Oakview, the Fleeners found a way down the interior stairs to the second floor, where firefighters put a ladder to a window and rescued them. An ambulance took Jim Fleener, who had suffered a collapsed lung, to City Hospital."At the hospital, everyone was covered in soot. The white people looked black and the black people looked white," said Pansyetta Fleener. "It was so strange."On Cote Brilliante, rescuers freed Hallie Harris' mother and grandmother, who were taken to Homer G. Phillips Hospital for observation. The Harrises salvaged only an old trunk. They went to live with a brother, then to a Red Cross shelter."The whole neighborhood was destroyed. I didn't realize until the next day that so many other places in the city had been hit," Hallie Harris said in a recent interview. "It is not a pleasant memory. Really, I don't like to think about it."By noon after the storm, the temperature had dropped to 31.Three days after the tornado struck, workers freed a dog named Trixie from the collapse of the three-story building at 4269 Olive. Newspapers ran photos of Trixie licking Anthony Cole, 2, who was thrilled to have him back.SIRENS' ROLEInspectors totalled the damage: 47 homes and buildings destroyed, 245 with major damage, 1,633 more with minor damage. Almost 1,400 people were homeless. Citizens donated $240,000 to the Red Cross. Estimates of total destruction ran to $12 million.Nature's harsh land clearance 50 years ago helped spur the budding entertainment district at Olive and Boyle, known as Gaslight Square. It flourished as a jazz mecca until the early 1970s, when crime and urban decay overwhelmed it.After Feb. 10, 1959, public responders did some soul-searching. The Weather Bureau stood behind its decision not to call for a tornado warning, but soon received better radar. Mayor Raymond Tucker suggested using air-raid sirens for tornadoes, but retired Gen. Francis Hardaway, local civil defense chief, said it would produce war scares. The St. Louis area wouldn't begin using sirens for weather warnings until May 1967, three months after three people were killed by a tornado that struck north St. Louis County. Since then, 20 people have been killed by tornadoes in St. Louis and surrounding counties. The debate over the utility of sirens continues, but warning systems are more sophisticated today. And a good thing — the region served by the local Weather Service office, a radius 120 miles out, gets an average of 23 tornadoes each year.toneil@post-dispatch.com 314-340-8132

WeatherBrains 159: Dave Schwartz

http://www.mevio.com/view/?kId=143036&tId=2

We have another great guest this week thanks to Dr. Tim Coleman. We chat with Dave Schwartz formerly of The Weather Channel. A lifelong weather buff, Dave loves tracking and discussing nor’easters, hurricanes, and other dramatic weather. Naturally, the Blizzard of ‘93 is tops as one of his favorite weather event. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Dave attended Arizona State University and graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Before The Weather Channel, Dave worked for twelve years in the mental health field. He joined The Weather Channel in 1985, working both in the Forecast Center and as a radio broadcaster, before honing his camera work through The Weather Channel’s Apprentice Program. He first appeared on-air full time at The Weather Channel in June, 1991. Dave traces his interest in weather to watching the sky and the tornado from the wonderful movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” Beside old movies and cloud watching, Dave has a variety of interests including physical fitness, dancing, singing, and art.
Other discussions in this weekly podcast include topics like:this week features a bit of a mid-winter thaw moderate risk for the Southern Plains for Tuesday, February 10th hottest 86 in Texas viscous fires in Australia and more! Our mail bag has been postponed until next week.A future guest will also come from The Weather Channel, Stu Ostro, in about two weeks and next week we’ll have Doug Gilliam from Mississippi State University talking about the work flow for forecasting - and he should know since he’s won many a forecasting contest. From The Weather Center: WeatherBrains 101: The professor delves into a bit of history this week as he looks at how old the field of meteorology really is. Most people probably think it is a rather young topic, but some of the earliest study and writings can be traced all the way back to Aristotle and Hippocrates.TWIWH: Bill Murray takes a look at This Week in Weather History with a look at the week of February 11th through February 18th. And as you might expect, cold weather made some headlines with brutally cold air and a major snow event that stretched from Florida to Maine.Listener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. The survey takes just a minute or two to complete and provides us with an opportunity to learn where you are and hear your thoughts and comments on the show. From Jason Foster:

***Be Sure to watch in High Quality Version for full effects***

Using a water proof housing for my camera, I was able to walk up and get some of the closest surge video you'll see. Unfortunately, the housing I was using was not designed for this camera, so there is some slight cropping of the video because of the outer edge of the port.

This is low resolution stock video shot in Standard Definition 4:3 format. Please contact me for stock sales and licensing. No unauthorized use is permitted. All violators will be reported and prosecuted.

Major Accident On I-69 In Indiana After Morning snow kills 2 and hurts 11

http://www.indystar.com/article/20090203/LOCAL/90203006

FISHERS, Ind. – At least two people died and 11 were seriously injured today after a crash involving at least 31 vehicles -- including nine semis -- on southbound I-69 in Hamilton County, the state police said.
OAS_AD('160x600_1');

Indiana State Police Sgt. Rod Russell said about 1 p.m. that multiple accidents after a morning snowstorm had shut down around 45 miles of southbound I-69 from the Alexandria exit in Delaware County through Indianapolis. Also, roughly 35 miles of northbound I-69 from Indianapolis to the Daleville exit, also in Delaware County, had been closed by 1 p.m. because of multiple crashes and slide-offs.By 5:15 p.m. the northbound lanes of I-69 reopened, according to Sgt. Anthony D. Emery of the state police, but the southbound lanes remained closed."We are asking all motorists to use extra caution when traveling through this area," Emery said in an e-mail. "There are still a lot of slick spots on the roadway."
Mike Burns, a spokesman for the State Police post at Pendleton, said 11 people were taken to hospitals from the crash that occurred about 9 a.m. At least three of the 11 had been trapped in their vehicles, according to Ron Lipps, a Fishers Fire Department spokesman. Five other people had minor injuries and refused treatment at the crash site, Burns said.Burns said I-69 was closed into the night because of a limited number of tow trucks to remove vehicles from the scene. Many vehicles remained in heaps on the road by sundown around 6 p.m.Fishers Police Department spokesman Sgt. Gerry Hepp said 25 survivors of the crash on southbound I-69 were taken to the police station for interviews with the state police.“I’ve never seen anything like it ... in my 18 years in Fishers.” Hepp said. The identities of the two who died were not available. In addition, Hepp said, a person in a Ford Escape was trapped for 80 minutes under a semi trailer, with temperatures in the lower teens, but was rescued and taken to a Fishers emergency room before being moved to Methodist Hospital. The person, who was not identified, was in critical condition, he said.Hepp said snow brought near white-out conditions during the crash. A Fishers firetruck looking for an inverted vehicle had stopped to assist another vehicle, which may have started the chain-reaction crash, he said.Indiana State Police Sgt. Anthony Emery said weather conditions, speed and drivers following too closely caused the crash. It started when two vehicles hit a firetruck helping a motorist on the roadside, Emery said.
Lipps sent a text alert within minutes of the fatal crash about 10 miles from I-465: "We have multiple entrapment, injuries."Within an hour of the crash, police used spray paint to mark numbers on vehicles to try to keep count and determine their order in the crash.State police offered to take stranded motorists to Fishers High School, but none accepted the offer, according to Lipps. The firefighter who was in the initial crashes was not injured, he said.Northward on I-69 in Madison County, two separate crashes on southbound I-69, both at 10:06 a.m. near Pendleton, also involved multiple vehicles, Burns said.About a mile north of the Pendleton/Noblesville exit for Ind. 38, two people were hurt in a crash of 27 vehicles. About a mile south of the same interchange, no one was hurt in an 11-vehicle crash.

This week we return to the mundane world of weather. And you can be sure the word ice will appear a number of times as winter has grabbed hold of Alaska once again.
Other discussions in this weekly podcast include topics like:
Snow inundates England
Cold returns to Alaska
Fairbanks was quiet cold with temps 20 degrees below average
Snow cover stands at 36 percent
Discussion of model madness on winter storm
and more!
While the Post Office considers trimming back on mail delivery, our mail bag continued to get the attention of readers and the dapper Email Officer.
And next week we’re going to have a special guest - Dave Schwartz, formerly of The Weather Channel. Plus James is working on getting forecast pointers from Doug Gilliam, professor at Mississippi State University.
From The Weather Center:
WeatherBrains 101: It has certainly been a long time since the young professor has seen a display of these during his early years in Vermont. So this week it’s a look at the aurora borealis or northern lights. What are they and what causes them? Is there a southern equivalent?
TWIWH: Bill Murray takes a look at This Week in Weather History with a look at the week of February 3rd through February 10th. This was certainly a landmark week for weather historians as President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law legislation creating what we know today as the National Weather Service .
Listener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. Video from the Devastating February 5, 2008 Tornado Outbreak

The one year anniversary of the worst tornado outbreak in the month of February in U.S. History is coming up on Thursday! Also dubbed The Super Tuesday Tornado Oubreak, 87 tornadoes were confirmed along with a LARGE squall line that also set a tornado down in Indiana near Putnam County. I also saw a power line get ripped from its pole during a 70 mph gust in Seymour, IN and watched it catch on fire during that night in that squall line.
