Indianapolis Ties For 6th Biggest Snowfall In City History With This Storm!!!!!

This ties this for the 6th largest snow total for a storm in Indianapolis.
The last time a bigger snowstorm struck the airport was when12.8 inches fell in January 1996. The Great Blizzard of January 1978 dumped 15.5 inches of snow on the airport. The record snowfall for the Indianapolis area is 16.1 inches set in February 1910.
Looking at the big picture, as of 8 am central and southern Indiana had received from 6 to nearly 13 inches of snow since late Monday. Snowfall totals in southern Indiana were reduced some because 1/4 to 3/4 inch of ice also fell.

In addition to its significant lead as the most deadly icy road state in the US, Indiana has suffered both the worst single accident (4 fatalities) and the highest single-day icy road death toll (7 on December 26) in the country.

A Very Interesting Tornado Story
http://www.alabamawx.com/?p=14734&cpage=1#comment-69139
It happened six miles due north of downtown Havana Junction where I grew up.
But it happened 28 years before I joined the population of this ole earth.
It happened 105 years ago today.
It happened out of season.
It happened at the worst possible time.
It was especially strong for January.
There was no such thing as radar.
No satellites.
No trained storm spotters.
No weather radio.
No radio at all.
No T. V.
No cell phones.
Few, if any, old crank-type telephones.
It was an F4 tornado and it plowed through the heart of Moundville shortly after midnight on January 22, 1904. Moundville had not been established very long. It is located in extreme North Hale County just a few miles south of the Tuscaloosa County line.
Even though the entire downtown heart of Moundville was destroyed, the total property damage was assessed at only $80,000. Can you imagine!
It seems that the word “inflation” had not yet been coined in 1904.
37 fatalaties.63 injuries.
I am holding in my never nicotine-stained fingers a full page of black and white pictures of the damage owned by Cary Finley and assembled by Grace Chandler and published in the February 22, 1996 edition of The Moundville Times. I have looked at those pictures very closely a number of times and I think I would have rated the powerful tornado an F5 instead of an F4.
The tornado was not a long-track tornado. After destroying the town, it disappeared toward the NE following closely the tracks of the Alabama Great Southern Railroad.
These unusual things happened:
*Luckily, a northbound train pulled into Moundville very soon after the tornado occurred. The engineer, seeing what had happened, put his locomotive in reverse and raced all the way backwards to Akron where he sent a telegraph message to Tuscaloosa appealing for help. Doctors from Moundville, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham worked for two days treating the injured in temporary hospitals that were set up on Dr. Griffin’s back porch and at the Elliott store. That was the only store left standing. A newspaper reporter from the Birmingham paper traveled by train to write about the tornado. I think the name of the newspaper was the old Birmingham Ledger.
* An infant was snatched from its crib in the lower part of town and hurled through the air. It was airborne as it passed over the demolished stores. It was deposited unijured in an old cotton field more than 100 yards away.
* A woman was blown into a well 80-feet deep. She was later pulled out of the water still alive and not seriously injured. She was able to walk around.
* A horse was also blown into a well and later pulled out without a scratch.
* A young man was killed when a 2×4 timber many feet long was driven through his body. It entered through his neck and protruded through the left side of his abdomen.
* A trunk was picked up and deposited in Taylorville south of Tuscaloosa. A hat was found 9 miles away. It was new and had never been sold. Bolts of cloth were carried several miles.
* Everything in the tornado path was swept aside including heavily laden freight cars standing on the tracks. The tornado sucked heavy timbers from the rain cars and scattered them nearby.
* One of the nicest buildings in town was the Griffin Hotel. It was demolished as if a playhouse. Two men staying there met their death–one was a Birmingham salesman.
* Among the first people to reach the scene was the chief of police of Tuscaloosa and physicians from Tuscaloosa. The injured and dying had already been carried to the home of Dr. R. J. Griffin and the Elliott store on the east side of town where a temporary hospital had been set up.
NOTE: Much of this information was from The Moundville Times. Ray Chandler, who writes for the Times, has written several excellent stories on this tragedy over the last few years. The Moundville Times is an excellent weekly newspaper and, yes, I am a continuing subscriber. I never forget my roots.

WeatherBrains 156: Zoom Radar
If you are crazy about weather, this is THE netcast audio program for you! Of course, it helps to be a little nuts about technology, too, as we saw last week with our guest, Leo Laporte.
This week we return to the mundane world of weather. And you can be sure the word cold will appear a number of times as winter clenches its hold on much of the US during the last week or so.
Tonight our main topic is radar with a special guest. Jeff Berardelli is a meteorologist with CBS in Miami. Jeff is the founder of Zoom Radar, www.zoomradar.com, radar for web sites for television stations. Jeff is a weather geek, so he fits right in, but he knew little about computer technology so he waded into interactive display of radar. Jeff has a fascinating story of how he got it all going. The product allows people to zoom close in while retaining the resolution of the radar display. Plus Jeff talks a bit about the weather business in Miami.
Other discussions in this weekly podcast include topics like:Cold, cold, and more cold - weather that is. But some temperatures are warming - like in Alaska of all places. Snow cover has diminished by about 15 percent. and more! Our mail bag has been getting some attention and Kevin puts it in perspective. JB addresses the question of sling psychrometers. From The Weather Center:WeatherBrains 101: With all the cold weather embracing the Nation, the professor delves into a topic that is not easy to see - even when it is as cold as it is. Now the coldest day in Indianapolis since 1997!!
With a low of -12 degrees, Friday, January 16, 2009 becomes the coldest day in 12 years in Indianapolis. The last day as cold as today was back on the 12th of January 1997, also a low of -12.
Colder temperatures reported in Indiana at 7 am EST included 22 below zero at Attica in Fountain County...-23 degrees at Francesville in Pulaski County...-24 degrees at Knox in Starke County and -26 degrees at Angola in Steuben County. The Indiana state record low temperature is -36 degrees set at New Whitleland in Johnson County during January 1994.
Bitterly cold weather will continue today as temperatures will remain near or below zero through early Friday afternoon. The morning low temperatures today will be the coldest since 1994 in Lafayette and Muncie, 1997 at Indianapolis, and will be the coldest since 2004 in Terre Haute and Bloomington.
I will also add a note on the New Whiteland Record. That was taken at the New Whiteland Police Station just up the street from where I live at now. I lived in Morgantown, IN in January 1994 and it was -32 that morning there. I remember my hair that had a little bit of moisture and gel at the time froze SOLID! We also had a 1979 Lincoln that we had to drive to my job because my Beretta would not start. It was so cold that the choke in the engine of the Lincoln froze shut and we ended up pushing that TANK OF A CAR a half mile to a gas station to eventually get it towed.
We ended up with -11 for a low this morning here.
PIC 266 ARCTIC OUTBREAK PEAK IN CENTRAL INDIANA!!
Up to -10 thus far on this Jan 15 evening. Headed for a low of -13!!
Coldest Day In Indianapolis In Nearly 5 Years Yesterday!
With a low of -9 degrees, Thursday, January 15, 2009 was the coldest day in nearly 5 years in Indianapolis. The last day to be this cold was back in January of 2004. The low temperature on the 30th of January in 2004 was a bone-chilling -11 degrees.
Bitterly cold weather will continue today as temperatures will remain near or below zero through early Friday afternoon. The morning low temperatures today will be the coldest since 1994 in Lafayette and Bloomington, and will be the coldest since 2004 in Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Bloomington.

Health Care Community Discussions
We should have more discussions like this in each of our communities. But the LAST thing we need is Nationalized Health Care. Cons Outnumber the Pros and this website has a good list of the Pros And Cons:
http://www.balancedpolitics.org/universal_health_care.htm
The Cons Speak More Volumes On This In My Opinion:
1.There isn't a single government agency or division that runs efficiently; do we really want an organization that developed the U.S. Tax Code handling something as complex as health care?
2."Free" health care isn't really free since we must pay for it with taxes; expenses for health care would have to be paid for with higher taxes or spending cuts in other areas such as defense, education, etc.
3.Profit motives, competition, and individual ingenuity have always led to greater cost control and effectiveness.
Government-controlled health care would lead to a decrease in patient flexibility.
5.Patients aren't likely to curb their drug costs and doctor visits if health care is free; thus, total costs will be several times what they are now.
6. Just because Americans are uninsured doesn't mean they can't receive health care; nonprofits and government-run hospitals provide services to those who don't have insurance, and it is illegal to refuse emergency medical service because of a lack of insurance.
7. Government-mandated procedures will likely reduce doctor flexibility and lead to poor patient care.
8. Healthy people who take care of themselves will have to pay for the burden of those who smoke, are obese, etc.
9. A long, painful transition will have to take place involving lost insurance industry jobs, business closures, and new patient record creation.
10. Loss of private practice options and possible reduced pay may dissuade many would-be doctors from pursuing the profession.
11.Malpractice lawsuit costs, which are already sky-high, could further explode since universal care may expose the government to legal liability, and the possibility to sue someone with deep pockets usually invites more lawsuits.
12.Government is more likely to pass additional restrictions or increase taxes on smoking, fast food, etc., leading to a further loss of personal freedoms.
13. Like social security, any government benefit eventually is taken as a "right" by the public, meaning that it's politically near impossible to remove or curtail it later on when costs get out of control.

WeatherBrains 155: Technology Guest
If you are crazy about weather, this is THE netcast audio program for you!
The gang from Weather Brains breaks new ground for the show with a very special guest - Leo Laporte from the excellent podcast, This Week in Tech - also known as TWIT. Everyone knows we are nuts over technology so what better person to have on the show than Mr. Technology himself. James Spann will probably never be the same after this show.
Leo comes to us via Skype from Petaluma, CA, where it was in the low 80s today. And Leo talks openly about doing the podcasts and state of technology and media changes today.

and more!
Our mail bag has gotten some special questions for our special guest, so James Spann handles the duties in this episode.
From The Weather Center:
WeatherBrains 101: To borrow a phrase from a popular song, “Does anybody really know how cold it is?” This week the extensive research department under the direction of the illustrious professor tackles the topic of thermometers as prompted by a question from Doug. And what a timely topic, too, as brutally cold air surges across much of the Nation this week.
TWIWH: Bill Murray has a scary story from the week of January 13th. The winter of 1952 certainly showed the power of nature as an immense snow storm became a big obstacle for a particular train.
Listener Surveys: Okay, we continue to drive this topic into the ground, but we really do like to hear from you. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fill out the Listener Survey. The survey takes just a minute or two to complete and provides us with an opportunity to learn where you are and hear your thoughts and comments on the show. Click here to take the survey.

Winter Weather Advisory Until 7PM Locally

However this is around 6PM this evening, the thickness lines are much closer together and closer to us. With the Freezing Line very close to us around this time as well, we should see a quick transition from rain, to brief freezing rain/sleet mix, before going over to all snow by around this time if not a couple hours before hand.
NAM model shows us ending up with about 1 inch of snow total on the ground about this time tomorrow morning. 1-2 inches looks to be the most likely target at this point in time, with much higher amounts North And East Of Here

GCC Podcast 01-04-09
Do you have a vision for your life? How about starting the new year off with a plan guaranteed to make 2009 a better year?
GCC Podcast 12-28-08
As we wrap up another Christmas, let’s look back on 2008, consider how blessed we really are, then re-check our attitude towards another year.
Indiana to get more disaster relief funding
Indiana will receive an additional $18.1 million in federal disaster funding to help communities recover from storms and flooding that hit the state last year. Gov. Mitch Daniels announced the aid from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday. Daniels says Indiana has secured nearly $600 million in disaster relief connected with last year's storms, which included flooding in June and September and high winds from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. The money is part of $450 million being distributed to 19 states and Puerto Rico. It will be used to provide social services to people affected by natural disasters and to build and repair health care, child care and other social service facilities.
4th Ice Storm Claims AGAIN More Lives In Central Indiana!!!
Icy roads are being blamed for numerous accidents in southern and central Indiana, including one that killed a Petersburg woman on Indiana 57 about 30 miles north of Evansville. The Gibson County Sheriff's Department says a northbound white Pontiac Firebird apparently went out of control on a railroad overpass near Oakland City about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday and collided with a coal truck in the opposite lane, bursting into flames. The car's driver, who was killed, was identified as 20-year-old Ebony Star Alvey. Indiana State Police Sgt. Don Gregory says portions of Interstate 65 were temporarily closed in the Seymour and Columbus areas so that salt trucks could treat the slick roadways. The National Weather Service says the mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected to taper overnight to a mix of light snow and light freezing drizzle.
True Legend In Podcasting, C.C. Chapman
http://theadvanceguard.com/
http://www.managingthegray.com/
http://www.accidenthash.com/
Coming up on the next edition of The Post It Cast, I will have an audio version filled with Podsafe Music and I also will be doing follow up review/questions from the email interview that I had with Boston Based Marketing/Podcasting Pioneer, C.C. Chapman. Below are the initial questions I asked CC and his responses. Definately check out all of his websites and if you goto the CC-chapman.com website, you will find even more ways to reach C.C. He is truly a pioneer in podcasting, and was one of the first and most popular podcasts that came from the old Podshow network (Now http://www.mevio.com/)
#1 Before you got involved in new media, what are some of the projects that you have been involved with?
My background is in computers and for the longest time that is what I was doing. I focused a lot on usability and intranet design. Right out of college, my first job was requirements gathering for a consulting company that worked with the US Government. The most high profile project I worked on was the system that handled Y2k funding requests for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
#2 Tell us about how all of your podcasts came to be
Well my first one, Reality Bitchslap Radio, came about when I got my first iPod (December 2004) and I started reading about the different things you could do with it. I had been a blogger for a while so I knew about the audio blogging concept and podcasting seemed to be just that. But, I quickly saw it as something more and got really into it. We use to play one indie song per show and people really seemed to react well to it so I thought doing a music show made more sese.
On January 10, 2005 I launched Accident Hash and have been going strong ever since. I was always the guy who loved to play new music for people and introduce new tunes. I had done college radio while at Bentley so the love was there.
Managing the Gray came about after I attending my first marketing conference and I realized that I knew more about the coming change then most people in the room did so I figured I'd share my thoughts via a podcast. People seemed to connect with what I was saying and it lead me to eventually make this my full time career.
#3 The Advance Guard is a fascinating project. Tell us about how this project came to be and where you look to take it in the next 5 years
Well calling it a project is not really the right thing. It is a full blown company that I started with my business partner Steve Coulson. He has a resume that scares me because of all the big agency experience he has and projects he has worked on. We found out at a previous company that we worked together really well and circumstances brought us together to form a company.
The fun thing about The Advance Guard is that we are working with brands of all sizes to leverage emerging technology in their marketing programs. So far we've worked with a variety of clients including Verizon FiOS, Thomas Nelson, HBO, mDialog, Didiom, Coca-Cola and American Eagle Outfitters.
Every day I wake up excited to work and that is all I can ask for. In the future our plan is to grow, but never get too big. We like the idea of staying small and nimble and working with strategic partners when necessary to execute our campaigns. I'd like to see us with a larger office in NYC and another one in Boston. The future looks exciting for us and I can't wait to get there.
#4 Growing up, who were some of your favorite actors on Television? Musicians on the radio?
I've always been a Robin Williams fan since first seeing him on TV. On the music side I've been a life long Prince fan for as long as I can remember. I was certainly a child of the 80's so I love all the music of the time. I'm still a music junkie and listen to a lot of the stuff I did then, tons of indie bands or course and lean more towards the alternative and acoustic genres these days more then any other.
#5 Do you think we will continue to see mainstream artists come along down the path of new media to promote their music, new and old?
For sure! We are seeing it now just how broken the old music business was. Artists are trying to figure out what is the best way to make a buck and keep their creative freedom. Distribution and touring are really the two big nuts to crack right now. An artist can get their music out online and such, but getting on store shelves and into venues is not as easy as everyone thinks.
I'd love to see more mainstream acts working WITH indie acts to figure out this space. They can certainly both help each other out. You look at what someone like Matthew Ebel or Geoff Smith is doing with their music and why companies and other artists are not reaching out to work with them is beyond me.
#6 Do you think we will continue to see an increase in the number of Video Type Podcasts? What are some of your favorites?
Video will continue to grow. The cost to produce them continues to drop and every day there seems to be a new platform to watch them on. I can now sit down and watch anything on my television from the latest episode of Lost to the newest Ask A Ninja. For me there is no difference and those boundaries are going to continue to drop for the general public.
I constantly watch a variety of things, but my favorites have to include Epic Fu and Geek Brief TV. Both of those have been delivering killer content since I first discovered them and they never dissapoint.
#7 Did you like the move of the New Media Expo To Vegas? Do you think that it will be held in many more cities across the nation, such as Chicago, Indianapolis, or even Boston?
The move was interesting. The bigger venue was cool, but it lost all of the community feel that it had in it's orginal location.
This year will prove to be a very interesting one with the merger with Blog World. I think it makes sense because of the obvious overlap of audiences and the closeness in timing last year. I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves.
#8 Tell us about some of the most memorable storms you have experienced in Boston?
There is nothing better then when the sky is pitch black and then there is a flash of lightning that turns it to day light for a brief second followed by the rolling of thunder. I love that! One of my favorite things about summer in New England.
#9 What should we expect to see from you during the next year in terms of new media?
I'm going to be producing more video then I have in the past. It is something I've missed doing since my old days of running a micro budget indie film company. I've also got a new blog project I'm working on and there will still be plenty of the old podcasts and photography coming.
Thanks again CC and stay tuned for the follow up podcast in the next few days!!
