On May 8, 2009 at 6:44AM a line of Severe storms moved into the area. This was a derecho that is a widespread and long-lived violent line of storms usually formed as a bow echo that causes straight line winds from 58 to over 110mph winds in some cases. Well this derecho had winds from 80 to 110mph in Southeast Kansas, and in Southwest Missouri. The winds came fast and they came in violent uprooting trees, knocking down powerlines, and damaging buildings.

As this powerful derecho moved into parts of Southwest Missouri it became very violent. A wind gust was reported in Carthage, MO up to 93mph. Chetopa, KS experienced straight line winds from 60mph up to 80mph. The conditions was like a Category 1 hurricane. It was quite unbelievable.
